Ngarunui Beach
Ngarunui Beach, on the west coast of the North Island, is the main beach in the world-famous surf town of Raglan. Known for its long stretch of black sand and consistent waves, it’s a popular spot for beginner and experienced surfers alike. The Tasman Sea brings in strong swells, but the beach has some more sheltered parts ideal for learning to surf.
Lifeguards patrol during summer, making it a safer option for swimming than some of the nearby surf breaks.
The dramatic coastline, shaped by volcanic activity, gives the area a rugged appeal. At low tide, the wet sand reflects the sky, creating a striking effect against the verdant cliffs.
Above the beach, walking tracks lead to scenic viewpoints, while the town of Raglan, just a short drive away, offers cafés, art galleries, and a laid-back surfy vibe.
