Playa Tunquén

Despite being within day trip distance of Valparaiso the beach at Tunquén is still relatively undeveloped and retains its wild character, unlike virtually any other in the region. This is a good-sized beach measuring around 2km in length and even if it ever did get busy (which it doesn’t) there would be plenty of space to avoid the crowds.

Behind the beach is an area of dunes and a number of homes - apparently these are all dependent on solar power as there is no mains electricity here. This is quite an exclusive enclave with politicians and well-known artist numbering among the residents. To the north of the beach is the mouth of the Estero Casablanca froming an extensive area of wetlands - this is a haven for bird life and rare plants.

Playa Tunquén is a popular spot with surfers and anglers.
