Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge Beach
The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes is one of the largest coastal dune ecosystems in California, stretching along the coast between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. This vast and dynamic landscape features towering sand dunes, pristine beaches, and a rich diversity of plant and animal life. It is part of the larger dunes complex and a key site for both conservation and outdoor recreation.
Visitors can hike through rolling sand hills, some reaching heights of over 500 feet, while taking in spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The remote beaches are ideal for long walks, photography, and birdwatching, with species such as snowy plovers and peregrine falcons commonly seen in the area.
The region is also home to interesting movie history. A massive set was built here for Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 silent film The Ten Commandments, and remnants still remain buried beneath the sand. Guided tours and interpretive trails provide insight into both the natural and cultural significance of the area.
Due to its fragile ecosystem, certain areas of the dunes are restricted to protect wildlife, but there are plenty of accessible trails and scenic spots to explore.
